I quickly pulled on an oversized white T-shirt and a pair of jeans and slid the printed silk headband that Nia had bought for me this summer around my head. I finished off the look with a spritz of my Bath and Body Works vanilla sugar body spray.
The doorbell rang, and I bounded down the steps to open the door. Blakeâs hair looked like it had just been freshly straightened, and she had on a denim jacket and a black T-shirt and black jeans. Her mom stood beside her in almost the same outfit. They looked like sisters.
âHello!â I said. âCome in, my mom is just making some snacks.â
Blake breezed into our kitchen. She smelled like strawberries. I didnât know what perfume she wore, but it sure smelled expensive. My mother was standing at the kitchen island putting together hummus, pretzels, and some veggie sticks on a platter.
âBlake, itâs nice to finally meet you. And hi, Ericka, how are you? My husband has told me a lot about you.â
âItâs great to be here,â Blakeâs mom said warmly. âIâll be back for Blake before dinner. Is that all right?â
âOf course!â Mom answered. The women chatted as Mom walked Mrs. Williams to the door.
âYour house is really nice,â Blake said.
âThanks! Weâve been here as long as I can remember, I guess,â I said.
âDid someone live here before you?â
I didnât know the answer to that. âMaybe? Maybe someone famous? Had to be, since this house is old,â I said, trying to impress Blake. âMost old houses in Featherstone Creek were built by someone rich or famous.â I thought so, anyway.
Suddenly, I got a horrible itch in my nose, an itch that I couldnât scratch or stop. It was one of Victoriaâs lie detector signals! I scrunched my face, trying desperately not to give in to the impending sneeze explosion.
Blake looked at me, confused. I had to come cleanâthis was torture! âOkay, really I donât know who lived here before us.â
âItâs okay, I donât know who lived in our house before, either,â Blake said with a laugh. The itch immediately went away. Gee, thanks, Victoria.
I was eager to change the subject. âWhere should we study?â
âHereâs fine with me,â Blake said. Guess I didnât need to rearrange my room after all. I could have spent that time studying instead, so I wouldnât look like such a math dunce in front of Blake.
We spread our books across the kitchen table, pushing the snacks to the far corner. Blake took out her notes. âLet me see your quiz.â
