I quickly pulled on an oversized white T-shirt and a pair of jeans and slid the printed silk headband that Nia had bought for me this summer around my head. I finished off the look with a spritz of my Bath and Body Works vanilla sugar body spray.

The doorbell rang, and I bounded down the steps to open the door. Blake’s hair looked like it had just been freshly straightened, and she had on a denim jacket and a black T-shirt and black jeans. Her mom stood beside her in almost the same outfit. They looked like sisters.

“Hello!” I said. “Come in, my mom is just making some snacks.”

Blake breezed into our kitchen. She smelled like strawberries. I didn’t know what perfume she wore, but it sure smelled expensive. My mother was standing at the kitchen island putting together hummus, pretzels, and some veggie sticks on a platter.

“Blake, it’s nice to finally meet you. And hi, Ericka, how are you? My husband has told me a lot about you.”

“It’s great to be here,” Blake’s mom said warmly. “I’ll be back for Blake before dinner. Is that all right?”

“Of course!” Mom answered. The women chatted as Mom walked Mrs. Williams to the door.

“Your house is really nice,” Blake said.

“Thanks! We’ve been here as long as I can remember, I guess,” I said.

“Did someone live here before you?”

I didn’t know the answer to that. “Maybe? Maybe someone famous? Had to be, since this house is old,” I said, trying to impress Blake. “Most old houses in Featherstone Creek were built by someone rich or famous.” I thought so, anyway.

Suddenly, I got a horrible itch in my nose, an itch that I couldn’t scratch or stop. It was one of Victoria’s lie detector signals! I scrunched my face, trying desperately not to give in to the impending sneeze explosion.

Blake looked at me, confused. I had to come clean—this was torture! “Okay, really I don’t know who lived here before us.”

“It’s okay, I don’t know who lived in our house before, either,” Blake said with a laugh. The itch immediately went away. Gee, thanks, Victoria.

I was eager to change the subject. “Where should we study?”

“Here’s fine with me,” Blake said. Guess I didn’t need to rearrange my room after all. I could have spent that time studying instead, so I wouldn’t look like such a math dunce in front of Blake.

We spread our books across the kitchen table, pushing the snacks to the far corner. Blake took out her notes. “Let me see your quiz.”
